About the Mentors

Leslie Simionescu, Lead Mentor, E-RYT 500

Leslie has been practicing Yoga since her teens. She first came to Yen Yoga as a student in October 2011 and immediately felt at home. Leslie became a 200-hour Yoga Teacher through Yen Yoga and Fitness with Jennifer Lintvedt in Traverse City Michigan. Leslie is now a 500-hour advanced teacher through Janet Stone Yoga at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California. Leslie is trained in Bhakti yoga which is the yoga of devotion, mantra, chanting and sound.

Leslie has taught thousands of classes at Yen Yoga since she started teaching in 2012. She teaches to connect and inspire others to have self-acceptance, moving through their bodies feeling every emotion energetically, spiritually and mentally. Leslie believes yoga is much more than the asana – it is a way to live a life full of the ingredients we need to be present in our lives and serve others. Leslie also leads Yen Yoga’s Inspired Life 200-hour Training for aspiring teachers and students of life. She has taught workshops on the eight-limbed path of yoga and the Hot 26 asana yoga series. With her passion for connecting to the healing benefits of nature, Leslie has led SUP yoga teacher training on the beautiful waters of northern Michigan for the last seven years.

Becky Kalajian, E-RYT 500, FRCms

Since 2014, Becky has worked with thousands of clients to help them awaken to the power of their own breath, movement and mindfulness. By blending evidence-based mobility techniques and the ancient teachings of yoga, her classes help foster her students’ natural balance, strength and flexibility.

In addition to studying under Janet Stone for her 500-level teacher training certification, Becky is also a certified mobility specialist in Functional Range Conditioning ®, a method that strengthens joint function, improves athletic performance and deepens balance/body control mechanisms.

Along with easy-to-follow direction with the application of good mechanical alignment, students also learn about the teachings of yoga, which were developed to help people live richer, more meaningful lives. Each class is thoughtfully constructed around the student’s own inner journey toward healing and empowerment.

In 2015, she launched Yoga in the Vines, integrating summertime al fresco yoga with wine tasting at wineries on Old Mission and Leelanau peninsulas in Traverse City. Yoga in the Vines is now a TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice winner, has been featured in the book, “100 Things to Do in Traverse City Before You Die,” and was spotlighted on WOODTV’s “Eight West” show.

Becky also co-leads Yen Yoga’s Inspired Life 200-hour Training for aspiring teachers and students of life.

Jennifer Haase, E-RYT 500

Jennifer believes in teaching logically planned classes, leaving room for magic to grow. She completed her 200-hr Ashtanga training in Thailand and 500-hr Bhakti training in India, as well as 100 hours in yin/restorative yoga.

Although Jennifer teaches many classes that physically challenge students, she understands every student’s body is different. She fully honors and practices all styles of yoga.

Julie Schwalm, E-RYT 500

Julie Schwalm has been a massage therapist for 17 years and yoga instructor for eight years. She completed both her 200- and 500-hour RYT training through Union Yoga in Lake Leelanau. Her classes infuse pranayama, mindful movements and body awareness, exposing internal strength, outer softness and an aligned spirit. Her background in massage and Thai yoga therapy brings a masterful blend of mind-body-spirit based healing.

Julie provides a safe container for past patterns to unravel and intentional movement to begin.
