East Meets West Experience

Ayurveda 101: Ancient self-care system can help you help yourself

An ancient healthcare system is slowly becoming a buzzword in Western evidence-based trials.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists hundreds of studies on complementary and alternative medicine.

Most of “alternative” medicine is linked to ayurveda, a natural system of medicine developed more than 3,000 years ago in India.

According to John Hopkins Medicine, ayurveda is “based on the idea that disease is caused by an imbalance or stress in a person's consciousness.”

Rather than treating the symptoms, which Western medicine does, ayurveda seeks to understand – and treat– the root of what’s causing the disease.

This approach is remarkable in that, rather than a prescription, Ayurveda treatment focuses on the whole self. It starts with an internal purification process, followed by special diet, herbal remedies, massage, yoga and meditation.

The treatment process is aligned to your specific life force (dosha) and help by reducing symptoms, eliminating impurities, reducing stress/worry and increasing your life harmony.

Knowing your specific dosha is a great place to start if you are new to ayurveda. From that point, books, blogs, recipes, and more can guide you on leading a more intuitive self-care path. (Want to know your dosha? Check this out.)

The best place, however, is an experienced practitioner. Join Leslie Simionescu and Wendy Currie to take a deep dive in this amazing study. Sign up now at Mind Body Online!
